On her way home from work doing the accounts for our self catering cottages, Judith spotted this little chap, one of our resident Red Squirrels performing acrobatics on one of the bird feeders located on the grass outside Old Haybarn cottage, one of our three -bedroomed holiday cottages.
He was hanging upside down from the birdtable by his back legs, dangling over the edge, with his front legs grapling with the nut feeder, trying to extract peanuts. He was obviously enjoying quite a feast, despite his awkward position. Judith watched him for a good few minutes before one of our guests distrubed him and he shot off up the hill towards Beechwood, another one of our cottages, situated on the edge of the woods.
We have never seen him so far into the middle of the holiday cottages before, but we think he had emptied our squirrel feeders and had got hungry enough to foray further afield. Perhaps at this time of year, until the autumn harvest, food is more scarce for our little red friend! We will keep him in peanuts until the autumn, not so much self-catering in Scotland for wildlife but Dinner Bed and breakfast!!
