At Melfort Village, wildlife is not something you have to travel far to find. It moves through the gardens, woodland edges and open skies, appears beside quiet paths and – if you are lucky – surfaces in Loch Melfort itself. Some encounters are fleeting. Others may unfold just outside your cottage window. Together, they are part of what makes a stay here feel a world away from the everyday.

Wildlife at Melfort Village

At Melfort Village, wildlife is not something you have to travel far to find. It moves through the gardens, woodland edges and open skies, appears beside quiet paths and—if you are lucky—surfaces in Loch Melfort itself. Some encounters are fleeting. Others may unfold just outside your cottage window. Together, they are part of what makes a stay here feel a world away from the everyday.

A Landscape Alive with Wildlife

Our sheltered gardens, mature trees, surrounding woodland, open hills, shoreline and lochside setting create a wonderful variety of habitats. Guests and our team have recorded everything from familiar garden birds to pine martens, red squirrels, badgers, buzzards, sea eagles, golden eagles, otters and porpoises. Along the shore, limpets, mussels, crabs and moon jellyfish reveal another fascinating side of Melfort wildlife. Every season brings a different rhythm, and no two days of wildlife watching are quite the same.

In the Gardens and Woodland

Slow down around the quieter corners of the village and you may notice much more than first meets the eye. Robins, blue tits, chaffinches, siskins, nuthatches and other small birds move between branches and feeders, while red squirrels may be seen among the trees. Pine martens and badgers are more secretive, but our trail cameras have captured both exploring the resort after dark.

Look to the Skies

The skies above Melfort can be every bit as rewarding as the gardens below. Buzzards are regularly seen around the area, while patient observers may also be rewarded with the unmistakable sight of a sea eagle or golden eagle soaring overhead. Binoculars are useful, but sometimes the best approach is simply to stop, look up and give the landscape time.

Life Around Loch Melfort

The loch adds another dimension to wildlife watching. Otters may appear along quieter stretches of shoreline, and porpoises have been spotted moving through the water. Conditions, seasons and sheer luck all play their part, which is exactly what makes these encounters so memorable.

Discover the Seashore

Look closely around the shore and another miniature world comes into view. Limpets cling to the rocks, mussels gather between the stones and small crabs shelter in pools and crevices. Moon jellyfish may also be seen in the clear shallows or drifting through the loch. These delicate habitats are best enjoyed with care: watch where you step, leave attached shellfish in place, return any gently lifted stones exactly as you found them and never remove living creatures from the shore.

Feed the Wild Guests of Melfort

Pick up bird food from Reception, fill the feeder provided at your cottage and watch to see who comes to visit. Watch Wildlife Responsibly

The best wildlife encounters happen when animals are free to behave naturally. Watch quietly and from a respectful distance, never approach nests or resting wildlife, use the bird feeders provided rather than scattering food on paths, and keep dogs under close control. Please do not feed mammals or marine wildlife. If you are unsure about feeding birds or where to watch, our Reception team will be happy to help.

Melfort Wildlife Watch Photography Competition

The wild guests of Melfort are ready for their close-up. Photograph the birds and wildlife you encounter during your stay and enter Melfort Wildlife Watch for the chance to win another escape to the village.

How to Enter

Take an original wildlife photograph at Melfort Village during the competition period. Email it to rentals@melfortvillage.co.uk with your name, stay dates and a short description of what you spotted; or post it publicly on Facebook or Instagram, tag Melfort Village, add the Melfort Village location and use #MelfortWildlife. Entries close at 11.59pm on 31 October 2026.

Prizes

First prize: a Melfort Village 3 night short break in a 2 bedroom cottage, to be taken between November 2026 to March 2027, subject to availability excluding Christmas, New Year and school holiday period. Second prize: a £35 voucher for The Gunpowder Kitchen & Bar. Third prize: a bottle of wine and a box of biscuits.

Competition Notes

Photographs must have been taken by the entrant at Melfort Village. A maximum of five photographs may be entered per person. Social profiles must be public at the closing time so entries can be seen. Entries will be judged on originality, connection to Melfort Village wildlife and overall photographic appeal. In entering the competition, you agree that Melfort Village may use your photograph for marketing purposes with an appropriate credit.  Any persons portayed in the submitted photos must have given consent for the image to be submitted for competition and marketing purposes.
